Remarks on Behalf of the People of Japan, on the Occasion of the First Audience after the Accession to the Throne

[PROVISIONAL TRANSLATION]

I make these remarks with the greatest respect.

Your Majesty the Emperor succeeded to the Imperial throne today. The people of Japan come together in extending to Your Majesty their heartiest congratulations.

Just now, with wisdom and greatness, Your Majesty stated that Your Majesty will reflect deeply on the course followed by His Majesty the Emperor Emeritus [Akihito], act in accordance with the Constitution, and fulfill Your Majesty’s responsibility as the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people of Japan; and that Your Majesty will sincerely pray for the happiness of the people and the further development of the nation as well as the peace of the world.

Looking up to Your Majesty as the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people, we are determined to create in the midst of a rapidly changing international situation a bright future for a Japan in which we take pride, a Japan that is peaceful and brimming with hope, and create an era of culture coming into being and flourishing when people bring their hearts and minds together in a beautiful manner.

I hereby pray for peace in the era of Reiwa and extend my best wishes for the Imperial Household to flourish further.

即位後朝見の儀 国民代表の辞

令和元年5月1日

 謹んで申し上げます。
 天皇陛下におかれましては、本日、皇位を継承されました。国民を挙げて心からお慶(よろこ)び申し上げます。
 ここに、英邁(えいまい)なる天皇陛下から、上皇陛下のこれまでの歩みに深く思いを致し、日本国憲法にのっとり、日本国及び日本国民統合の象徴としての責務を果たされるとともに、国民の幸せと国の一層の発展、世界の平和を切に希望するとのおことばを賜(たまわ)りました。
 私たちは、天皇陛下を国及び国民統合の象徴と仰ぎ、激動する国際情勢の中で、平和で、希望に満ちあふれ、誇りある日本の輝かしい未来、人々が美しく心を寄せ合う中で、文化が生まれ育つ時代を、創り上げていく決意であります。
 ここに、令和の御代(みよ)の平安と、皇室の弥栄(いやさか)をお祈り申し上げます。
